Physiotherapy in Golf

In recent years the success of Tiger Woods has evoked a massive interest in the physical preparation of the golfer.  A plethora of books and advice are now available to the motivated golfer or PGA Professional or health professional who wishes to increase their knowledge in the area of physical preparation for golf.  The Golf Athlete staff and Team have been working in the physical development of golfers for many years - many in excess of 20 years both clinically and in research.  Their combined academic and practical experience, places them in an ideal position to provide scientifically credible information to the golf enthusiast.

The Golf Athlete philosophy is that you can be a good golfer and not an athlete.  You can be a good athlete and poor golfer - more simply stated: being golf fit, flexible and stable does not mean that you will be a great golfer!!  Finally, however, if you are a good athlete and you integrate your physical abilities to a structured technical development in the golf swing (in concert with good PGA professional's instruction and direction), then you will definitely become a better or even a great golfer.

Many players consult TGA Staff and members around the world, regarding what is the most appropriate golf specific training for them.  All exercise presciption to the golfer should commence with a thorough physical assessment or screening - see the About Us section of the website for in depth details.  Once this baseline information is clarified, individual remedial action can be taken to allow all budding golf athletes from 6 to 60+, to accelerate their path toward technical excellence.  Most of our frustrated clients are those who have programmes that are either not specific for their individual physical characteristics or too advanced in content or not directed to the major technical issues that they are struggling with.

We will, over time, examine some of the common technical faults that golfers present with and suggest possible interventions that players might like to take, in combination, with the PGA Professional's advice to improves their golf athletic development and technical improvement.

The TGA website Physiotherapy Section and the Blog, will provide a forum where like minded physical therapy professionals can access quality information regarding treatment options for golf injury as well as find the latest, leading edge trends in performance enhancement.  As well we would hope that our average golf enthusiasts will pose questions for the team around the world to ponder - and hopefully provide clear advice and interventions.  Please look at some of our golf specific education and instruction articles and if they are of interest to you, then please join our database to access a greater selection and depth of golf education across coaching, biomechanics, athletic development and physiotherapy.

It is hoped that many average players will also find the articles, advice and local contacts for professional advice useful in their specific countries in the world.

Over the coming months this section will introduce a number of initiatives regarding the physical asessment or screening of golfers.  This information will provide both subjective (questionnaire) strategies for the therapist, PGA Professional and the player.  Please let us know if there is direction or suggestion that you would like to add to this initiative - Contact the TGA Physiotherapy Director

Please provide us with your feedback about what information and advice you would like to access when you come to this section - Contact the TGA Physiotherapy Director
